Siurana: a jewel of Catalonia’s Saracen past

Siurana, one of Cornudella’s best-known towns, is famous for its strategic location on a cliff that offers spectacular views of the Siurana reservoir and the surrounding area. This small medieval village is steeped in legends, such as the famous story of the Moorish Queen, which adds a mystical air to the place. Among its main attractions is the Moorish castle, which dates back to the 9th century and offers a window into the region’s Islamic past.

The cobbled streets and the architectural ensemble of the village, among which the Romanesque church of Santa Maria stands out, create an atmosphere that transports visitors to another era, making Siurana an ideal destination for history and active tourism lovers. In addition to water activities, the reservoir is also a perfect starting point for excursions and hiking trails in the area. Surrounded by lush forests and steep cliffs, the trails around the reservoir allow visitors to enjoy unique landscapes and connect with nature.

The reservoir also plays an important role in the region’s water management, providing water resources to the Priorat’s agricultural lands.

The Moorish Queen of Siurana, Abdelazia

The legend of the Moorish Queen of Siurana, known as Abdelazia, is one of the most emblematic and tragic legends in the history of this small medieval village.

According to legend, Abdelazia was the daughter of the last Muslim Vali who ruled the castle of Siurana, an enclave that resisted the Christian onslaught for years.

Finally, when the troops of Ramon Berenguer IV approached and defeat was imminent, the queen refused to be captured. In an act of desperation, she mounted her horse and galloped to the edge of a cliff. Without stopping, she threw herself into the void, choosing death over becoming a prisoner. The rock where the tragedy occurred still bears the mark of the horse’s hoof, a place that has since been known as the Moorish Queen’s Leap.

A wide range of hiking routes

The area around Siurana has numerous routes that offer the opportunity to discover some of the most spectacular landscapes in the region. One of the best-known routes leads to Sant Joan de Codolar, a hermitage located in a rocky setting from where there are stunning views of Montsant. Another very popular route is the one that leads to the Roca Corbatera, the highest point of the Sierra de Montsant, at 1163 meters high, from where you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the entire region.

The more adventurous ones can enter the Barranc de la Bruixa, a rocky gorge that has a cave wrapped in the legend of the witch “na Lluerta”. Finally, another of the most distinguished enclaves in the area is the Pi de la Carabasseta, an emblematic solitary pine tree high up in the mountains, which serves as a reference for hikers exploring the region.
