What is Torredembarra like?

Beyond the most important towns, such as Salou, Cambrils or La Pineda, Costa Dorada hides many other places with a surprising charm. Torredembarra is located in the Baix Gaià area, in the northeast of the Tarragonès region, just 12 kilometres from the provincial capital, Tarragona, and less than half an hour from Reus. Its location also has a direct connection with the city of Barcelona, just over an hour away. The municipality of Torredembarra has 7 population centres: Torredembarra, les Àmfores, Baix a Mar, Clarà, Marítima Residencial, Molí de Vent and Els Munts.

Its economic engine is mainly tourism, due to its incredible climate and its excellent sun and beach offer; although fishing has also played and plays a very important role throughout the last century. Its marina, located on the Roquer cliff, hosts daily fish auctions in the fish market

If you visit the town, you can’t miss its lighthouse, which has earned the title of the tallest in Catalonia. In our article “The most beautiful lighthouses on Costa Dorada“, you will find more information about this infrastructure and many others that are in this area of the Catalan coast.

Evolution of Torredembarra

Although the municipality already had traces of settlement during Roman times, the town as we know it dates back to the Middle Ages, when one of the oldest neighbourhoods in what is now Torredembarra, called Clarà, began to be inhabited in the area.

From the 11th century onwards, several towers were built as fortresses in the municipalities of the area, one of them, the Clarà Tower, on the outskirts of the town.

As a result of this construction, the population spread around it, forming a new nucleus, which finally became an independent municipality in the 13th century.

From the 18th century onwards, Torredembarra experienced great economic and demographic growth, thanks to the concession it received of the right of entry of foreign goods at the local customs office, as well as the growing trade with America

The tourism sector did not begin to emerge until the 1960s. This was a time when there was a great increase in the population, due to immigration from the south of Spain.

Discover Torredembarra’s most beautiful beaches

The fine, golden sand, the crystal-clear water and the magnificent natural surroundings that accompany the landscape are three of the characteristics that make the beaches of Torredembarra unique. All of them can boast of the excellent quality of their waters and their services, recognised with the Blue Flag award.

If we go along its coastline, from the south, we will find the first of them, Canyadell beach, the smallest of them all. It is a cove, which is cradled by the surrounding cliffs, where you can enjoy the Mediterranean vegetation in all its splendour.

Another one of them is La Paella beach, one of the most familiar, due to its calm waters and its extensive shallow shore. It has areas dedicated to sports, such as beach volleyball courts; and it is very close to the marina, where you can enjoy numerous water activities, such as paddle surfing, snorkelling, kayaking, surfing and scuba diving, among others.

On the other hand, the Baix a Mar beach is about 800 metres long. Due to it connects the old fishermen’s neighbourhood with the Mediterranean Sea, it was once the way out to sea for the boats. Nowadays, it has a children’s play area, a maritime club and a sports area. In addition, in this area you will find a wide range of gastronomic establishments where you can taste the best local and Mediterranean cuisine.

Finally, Els Muntanyans beach, of great environmental value, has dunes and salt marshes that give it a different appearance from the rest. It is included in the Playa de Torredembarra and Creixell natural area, a set of dunes and wetlands inhabited by a unique biodiversity in this area of the central Mediterranean.

Other areas of interest along the Torredembarra coastline

In addition to its beaches, Torredembarra stands out for other places along its coastline, such as the Roca Foradada cave, a cavity formed by marine erosion, with a small pond inside. It is worth mentioning that in the past it was a fishing spot, since, before the construction of the port, the sea water reached the interior of this space.

Another emblematic place is El Roquer, a large cliff that characterises its coastline, on which the Torredembarra lighthouse is located. As well as visiting it by hiking along the path that runs along its length and enjoying the incredible views of the sea, you can discover another incredible perspective, its underwater side, thanks to the itinerary available.
