Music accompanies us in every moment of our lives. Moments of happiness, such as a celebration, a wedding, an anniversary, an outing with friends; and those of sadness, such as the loss of a loved one, a delicate moment, a breakup, etc. In all of them, there is always a melody that will remind us of that circumstance.
Moreover, there is music for all tastes, from classical, jazz, soul, rock, rap, pop, even metal, among many other styles, so it is very difficult not to like any of them. There is always one that we identify with, and we get carried away when we listen to it.
It is such an important element in our lives that it deserves a prominent date in our calendar. It is the 22nd of November, International Music Day, the day on which the death of Saint Cecilia, patron saint of musicians, is commemorated.
Would you like to enjoy this great day, with your family and friends? We present a series of interesting plans for you to celebrate International Music Day in Catalonia. You have at your disposal the Shuttle2Sun private transfer services, low-cost and sustainable, from Barcelona airport, Barcelona port and Camp de Tarragona AVE train station.
Origin of this day
The 22nd of November is dedicated to all musicians and composers who dedicate their lives to creating new melodies, as well as to all lovers and people who enjoy music. Saint Cecilia was chosen as the patron saint of music because she was always depicted with a musical instrument, such as the harp or organ, or singing.
The origin of this date goes back centuries, specifically to 1695 in Edinburgh (Scotland). Years later, other countries such as Germany, Spain and France joined in, and it later spread to America.
Benefits of music for our health
It should be noted that music has numerous benefits for our health and well-being, such as reducing anxiety and stress, improving our memory, helping us to sleep better and have better blood circulation, and helping us to cope with neurological disorders and the deterioration of our brain due to diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.
In addition, in the case of children, music improves their intellectual capacity and exercises their memory, encourages creativity and helps them to express themselves and develop their social skills, among other positive aspects.
Visit Palau de la Música Catalana
If you are visiting Barcelona in the next few days, we encourage you to visit one of the city’s modernist jewels, Palau de la Música Catalana, the work of the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, built between 1905 and 1908. This magnificent space was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, and every year it hosts a wide variety of premieres, cycles and performances.
In the coming dates, Palau has an extensive programme that includes, for example, concerts by Cor de Cambra del Palau; Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov; Tribute to John Williams, by Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès & Gimeno; performances by Philippe Jaroussky & Le Concert de la Loge, and Paul Lewis; Vivaldi’s ‘The Four Seasons’; among many other proposals.
Remember that with Shuttle2Sun‘s private transfer services, you can get to Barcelona from Barcelona airport, Barcelona port and Camp de Tarragona AVE train station.
Discover the Music Museum
Another of the proposals we bring you in this publication is a visit to the Barcelona Music Museum, in Auditori, which includes more than 2,400 instruments; a historical archive with donations from great musicians, such as scores, photographs and other works of art; some 13,000 recordings on various supports, from the last 300 years; and a multimedia archive with more than 60,000 elements.
The exhibitions available until the end of 2023 are ‘Found Tape Archive’, by British artist Ben Roberts, which consists of a collection of anonymous cassette tapes from around the world.
And the exhibition ‘Listening with your hands. Obsolete supports, ephemeral messages’, by the curator Ferran Fages, where you can learn about the different analogue formats that allowed the recording of sounds.
Live a ‘flamenco’ experience
Theatre Flamenco Barcelona City Hall, on Rambla Catalunya, offers ‘flamenco’ shows every day with the best artists and singers of the city. This is a wonderful opportunity to complement your visit to Barcelona by enjoying this musical genre, a tradition from the south of Spain, which has spread throughout the country and has become a benchmark of Spanish culture.
Music performances for Santa Cecilia
On Costa Dorada, many towns and villages hold concerts, open to the public, to celebrate Saint Cecilia’s Day, as well as various activities to bring music to the youngest members of the family, organised by music schools and conservatories. In addition, schools also organise ‘cantatas’ with the participation of their pupils.
Record shops
In any town you visit, you will find record and vinyl shops, where you can buy the greatest hits of your favourite artists, as well as find gems from the history of music, which you can take back with you as a souvenir of this getaway.
