Tarragona’s Cathedral

The most characteristic image of this cathedral is its unfinished main façade. You will be able to contemplate its great Gothic central body next to its two Romanesque doors.

Its Gothic part dates from between the 13th and 14th centuries and is unfinished due to the Black Death in 1348.

In the relief of the tympanum there is a representation of the Last Judgement with the image of Jesus Christ. Twelve figures represent the different social classes rising from their tombs to answer the call of several angels with heavenly trumpets. A little further down, the representation of hell with several dramatic scenes of the damned. On the mullion, the image of the Virgin Mary welcoming those who approach the central door of the cathedral. On each side of the doorway, statues of the Apostles and Prophets complete the ensemble.

The central nave of the Cathedral is 104 metres long, 16 metres high and 26 metres wide. It has a major organ designed by the architect Jaume Amigó in the 16th century and two lines of the choir stalls from the 15th century.

The Cathedral was reformed as a result of the events held to welcome San Pablo in 1963, moving part of the choir on both sides of the current presbytery and its door to the Diocesan Museum.

The chapels of Saint John the Evangelist, Saints Justina Eulalia and Saint Fructuosus are twins and were ordered to be built by Archbishop Joan Terés.
