Discover the history of Miami Playa

Before getting to know its coastline, it is necessary to understand the context in which the town is located. Miami Playa, also known simply as Miami, is one of the youngest tourist towns on Costa Dorada. It was born, as we know it today, in 1952, with the tourism boom. It was Marcel-lí Esquius y Garcia who visualised the potential of this picturesque stretch of coastline, previously owned by the Marquis of Marianao, and transformed it into what we know today as Miami Playa. Inspired by the beauty of Costa Brava, Esquius set out to create a new development in this unspoilt territory.

The name ‘Miami Playa’ reflects the vision of Esquius, who wanted to give the place an international feel. Many people from different communities in Spain, such as Aragon, Andalusia, Extremadura, Galicia and Castilla La Mancha, were welcomed by this coastal stretch of Tarragona, when they left behind their fields, homes and families in search of a better life. It was also people from around Europe who immigrated here in the aftermath of the Second World War in search of a new opportunity.

Over the years, Miami has evolved from an ambitious project to a thriving and diverse tourist destination. The first families who settled here in search of job opportunities in the tourism and construction sectors have put down roots in the community, giving rise to a vibrant, multicultural population.

In addition to its golden sand, crystal-clear waters and beautiful landscapes, Miami Playa boasts the tranquillity of its 12 kilometres of coastline, which, even in high season, is not usually very busy.

Coves of Miami Playa

Cristall beach is the most emblematic beach in the municipality. With an extension of approximately 1,200 metres, this beach has been awarded the blue flag for the quality of its waters and its environmental care. It has all the services of a large beach, such as showers, toilets, lifeguards and umbrellas, as well as a promenade with palm trees where you can enjoy a walk in the shade and try the typical food of the Mediterranean coast in its restaurants. Finally, if you are one of those who prefer to take advantage of the good weather to do nautical activities, on this beach you will find the Club de Mar where you can enjoy activities such as kayaking, paddle surfing and snorkelling.

On the other hand, the beach of Estany Gelat, located in an area declared a protected natural space. At 400 metres long, it is peculiar because of the small lake it forms and also because it hides a bunker from the Spanish Civil War.

Another of these is Pixerota Beach, Joan Miró‘s favourite beach. The surrealist artist loved to go down to his country house and swim in the crystalline waters of this beach. It also contains two war bunkers bathed by the water, which have been declared part of the municipality’s cultural heritage.

Finally, Punta del Riu Beach is the idyllic place for animal lovers who want to spend an unforgettable day on the beach with their dog.

Enjoy the paradisiacal coves of Miami Playa

It is not only the beaches that stand out in Miami, but also its multitude of coves, bathed by clean waters and surrounded by cliffs and pine trees, offering landscapes worthy of admiration. These cosy coves are the ideal place for the little ones to enjoy playing and making sandcastles, while the adults watch over them, quietly lying on the sand and enjoying the sun’s rays.

The municipality has 9 coves, some of the most outstanding are Cala dels Vianesos, Cala de les Sirenes, Cala del Misteri, Cala Bot and Cala del Pescador; all of them with their own charm.
