The origin of the festival of Sant Pere, in L’Ametlla de Mar

The summer festival, Sant Pere, in L’Ametlla de Mar, is held from around 29 June and is one of the most emblematic festivities of this coastal town, linked to its seafaring tradition. This celebration, organised mainly by the Cofradía de Pescadores and with the support of the Town Council, has a rich cultural history.

Sant Pere was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ and, before following Jesus, he worked as a fisherman. This link with the sea and fishing made him a very significant figure for fishermen, who rely on his protection and guidance during their journeys on the sea.

The figure of Sant Pere is not only important in L’Ametlla de Mar, but also in many fishing villages around the world.

In L’Ametlla de Mar, where fishing has been a fundamental activity for centuries, Sant Pere has a special place in the hearts of the inhabitants. The festival is not only of a religious nature, but also a celebration of the town’s culture and maritime heritage.

During these days, the municipality comes together to pay homage to its patron saint and give thanks for the bounty of the sea.

The festivity also includes typical Costa Dorada food and drinks, where fish and seafood are predominant, dishes that celebrate both the local culinary culture and the bounty of the sea.

Preparations and decoration

The preparations for the summer Fiesta Mayor begin days before 29 June. The streets and squares of the town are decorated with flags, garlands and festive lights. Fishermen prepare their boats to take part in the maritime procession, one of the most eagerly awaited moments of the celebration. The residents dress up in their best clothes, and the children take part in activities and workshops related to the traditions of the fiesta, such as the Literature and Drawing competition. In addition, the Cofradía de Pescadores and the Town Council are working hard to finalise the last details and make sure that, in these days, everything goes perfectly.
