History and heritage of Prades

The origins of Prades dates to Roman times, when a small farming village was established. During the Middle Ages, the village became an important trading and craft centre thanks to its strategic location in the Baix Camp region. During the 14th and 15th centuries, it experienced a great economic boom thanks to the production and trade of wool and silk, which allowed the construction of important buildings such as the church of Santa Maria.

During the War of Independence, Prades was an important centre of resistance against the French troops. In the 19th century, the town suffered an economic and demographic decline due to the emigration of many of its inhabitants to America. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the village became a tourist destination thanks to its natural beauty and cultural heritage and received many visitors from other towns such as Tarragona, Reus and even Barcelona.
