Game of Thrones in Girona: a tour of its settings

Girona became one of the most emblematic settings for the famous series Game of Thrones. The city provided the perfect backdrop for several crucial scenes in the sixth season.

One of the most iconic settings is the Cathedral of Santa Maria. The cathedral, which combines architectural styles ranging from Romanesque to Gothic and Baroque, is not only one of the city’s main tourist attractions, but also features prominently in the series. With its imposing baroque staircase, the cathedral became the Great Sept of Baelor in King’s Landing.

The area around the cathedral and the Plaça dels Jurats was used to represent the streets of Braavos. This maze of narrow cobbled streets and shady courtyards provided the perfect setting for several scenes from Arya Stark in Braavos.

The Pujada de Sant Domènec is another highlight. This staircase was used for several scenes in Braavos, especially in the episodes in which Arya Stark is pursued by the Forsaken Girl. Also, in trying to flee from the girl, Arya entered the Arab Baths, which represented the Baths of Braavos.

Finally, the Monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants, a magnificent example of Romanesque architecture, appeared in the series as the entrance to the Library of Antigua. In addition, the bridge just behind it, the Pont de Galligants, appears in the series as the Bridge of Braavos

Santa Maria Cathedral and its surroundings

First of all, we encourage you to read our publication “Cinema venues in Barcelona” and “Cinema venues in Tarragona” where we explain the most mythical places in Barcelona and Tarragona where several series and films have been filmed.

One of the most sought-after locations for filmmakers is Girona Cathedral, whose Gothic architecture, imposing façade and wide staircase provide the setting for many open-air scenes with a medieval atmosphere.

Great films have been shot in this magnificent place, such as Dominik Moll’s “The Monk“, released in 2011, which used the Cathedral steps to stage a medieval procession parade.

Also, the thriller directed by Eugenio Mira, in 2010, “Agnosia“, saw the cathedral stairs as a great setting to end his film.

Game of Thrones in Girona

We also find some classics such as “Chimes at Midnight” (1965), by Orson Welles, “The Archer of Sherwood” (1971), by Giorgio Ferroni and “The Norman Sword” (1971), by Roberto Mauri, some of whose scenes were filmed in this wonderful medieval setting.

Films shot in the Barri Vell of Girona

Girona’s Barri Vell, with its cobbled streets, medieval architecture and historic atmosphere, has been another of the city’s most emblematic backdrops for several film productions.

Tom Tykwer’s film “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer“, released in 2006, filmed some of its scenes in the neighbourhood’s picturesque streets, the perfect setting for recreating 18th-century France.

Also, the Spanish film “Tengo ganas de ti“, by Fernando González Molina, released in 2012 and starring Mario Casas, passed through the streets of Girona’s Barri Vell and over the Pont d’en Gomez, one of the bridges that crosses the Onyar River at the entrance to the neighbourhood.

In addition, we recognise several areas of this neighbourhood in one of the most recent films shot in Girona, released in 2021, “Las leyes de la frontera“, by Daniel Monzón, which tells the story of the Girona quinqui, a love story based on the novel by Javier Cercas with the same name.

On the other hand, a Korean series “The Legend of the Blue Sea“, by Jin Hyuk, boosted Asian tourism in the city in 2016, as it was partially filmed here.

The Call de Girona, the ideal backdrop in several films

The Call de Girona, one of the best-preserved Jewish quarters in Europe, has also been the backdrop for several film productions. The labyrinths of alleyways and courtyards offer a mystical and authentic atmosphere that has attracted numerous filmmakers.

Scenes from one of the most popular films in Spain, “Ocho apellidos catalanes“, the sequel to “Ocho apellidos vascos”, directed by Emilio Martínez-Lázaro and starring Dani Rovira and Clara Lago in 2015, were filmed in the station and the Jewish quarter of Girona.

Another highlight is “Costa Brava“, a 1995 film directed by Marta Balletbò-Coll.
