The Antònia Adroher Library
The Antònia Adroher Library opened its doors in 2008 with the aim of providing a more suitable cultural space for the Taialà-Germans Sàbat, Domeny and Fontajau neighbourhoods, replacing the old Taialà Library. The latter, inaugurated in 1978 next to the Taialà school, functioned for years as the only municipal library in Girona.
The new building is named after Antònia Adroher, an educator and the first woman councillor on Girona City Council. Adroher is remembered for her commitment to the fight against illiteracy, the improvement of school conditions and pedagogical renewal. The choice of her name for this library is a tribute to her valuable work in the educational and social fields.
Since its opening, the Antònia Adroher Library has established itself as a cultural reference. Its modern facilities include an extensive collection of books, magazines and audiovisual material.
The Carles Rahola Library
The Carles Rahola Library is the flagship of Girona’s library network and a cultural reference throughout the province. Its history dates back to 1848, when it was created to house books from confiscated convents. Initially located in the Old Institute in Carrer de la Força, the library passed through several locations before finding its current home.

In 1951, it moved to the old Hospice building in Plaça del Hospital, built by order of Bishop Tomàs de Lorenzana, where it remained until work began on its modern headquarters in 2011.
Since December 2014, the Carles Rahola Library has been located in Carrer Emili Grahit, in the area of the old Casernes. Its contemporary building offers a spacious and functional space, designed to meet the needs of a diverse population. The library has one of the most extensive collections in the network, specialising in Catalan literature, history and art, as well as a extensive selection of magazines, music and films. It also hosts numerous cultural activities, from book presentations to exhibitions and events for all audiences.

The Salvador Allende Library
In the Santa Eugènia neighbourhood, the Salvador Allende Library pays tribute to the former Chilean president and symbol of the struggle for social justice. This centre, located in a former spinning mill, stands out for its accessible nature and its extensive collection, which includes literature, educational resources and works related to the figure of Allende and human rights.
The library has also become a cultural meeting place in the area, with activities that encourage integration and citizen participation. Its functional design and welcoming atmosphere make it a perfect choice for both study and cultural leisure.
The Ernest Lluch Library and the Just M. Casero Library
Another of the centres you can find in Girona is the Ernest Lluch Library, located in the heart of the Montilivi neighbourhood, in a modern, bright building that invites you to read and learn. Its name honours the Catalan economist and politician who left an important intellectual and social legacy.
As well as the Just M. Casero Library, which, as its name suggests, pays homage to a journalist and politician who was much loved in Girona. Its collection includes general literature, periodicals and multimedia resources, adapted to the needs of users in the Pont Major neighbourhood.
Girona library extensions
Girona’s library extensions are an essential complement to the main library network, designed to bring library services to areas where there is no physical library. These spaces offer access to a varied selection of reading materials, such as books and magazines, adapted to the specific needs of each community.
Each extension is designed to facilitate public engagement in cultural activities, such as book clubs and workshops. They also function as meeting points where residents can enjoy a welcoming environment for learning and cultural exchange.
Girona’s libraries are living spaces where history, culture and community meet. As we explore these libraries, we discover not only the knowledge they hold, but also the essence of a city that deeply values its cultural heritage and its commitment to the future.
