All you need to find out about Horta’s Labyrinth in Barcelona

The Horta Labyrinth is a historic park located in the Horta-Guinardó district of Barcelona, Catalonia. It is one of the oldest gardens in the city and one of the few historical labyrinths that can still be visited in Europe. If you don’t want to miss it, use Shuttle2Sun‘s low-cost and sustainable shared transfer services and private transfer services from Barcelona airport, Barcelona port, Girona airport, Reus airport and Camp de Tarragona AVE train station.

Origin

This park covers 55 hectares and was inaugurated in 1794 as part of the private estate of the aristocrat Joan Antoni Desvalls i d’Ardena. One of the park’s most outstanding features is its rich history. During the Spanish War of Independence, the park was used as a refuge by French soldiers. Later, the park was acquired by the Desvalls family and became a meeting place for the high society of the time. It was during this period that the labyrinth was built, and the themed gardens planted. In 1967, the city of Barcelona acquired the park and opened it to the public. Since then, it has become one of the most popular parks in the city, being a perfect place to spend a quiet and relaxing afternoon away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The Labyrinth of Horta is located just 15 minutes from Barcelona airport and very close to the centre of the city.

Fauna and flora

In addition to its natural beauty and rich history, the park is a very important place for the city of Barcelona from an ecological point of view. In terms of biodiversity, the park has a large number of trees and ornamental plants and is home to a wide variety of bird species and other animals. The park has been classified as a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) and as a Site of Natural Interest (SIN).

Walking along its paths, you can find species such as cypresses, pines, holm oaks and olive trees, which provide shade and create a calm and cool atmosphere. In addition, there is a wide variety of flowers and shrubs, which add colour and fragrance to the park at different times of the year.

As for the fauna, the Horta Labyrinth offers a refuge for various species of birds, insects and small mammals. It is common to see birds common to Barcelona, Costa Brava and Costa Dorada, such as sparrows, robins, pigeons and blackbirds flitting among the trees. In addition, the park is also home to squirrels that can be spotted hopping from branch to branch.

The garden also has a pond that is home to several species of fish and amphibians from the Mediterranean coast, such as carp and frogs. This pond provides an important aquatic habitat for local wildlife.

If you plan to travel tu Girona airport or you are in the towns of Blanes, Platja d’Aro, Lloret de Mar or Girona and want to come and visit the labyrinth in Barcelona, you can do so with Shuttle2Sun transfers.

The Horta Labyrinth

The jewel in the crown of this park is, without a doubt, the Horta Maze. This fun labyrinth not only provides a cultural and recreational experience, but also the opportunity to enjoy and appreciate the biodiversity present in this beautiful natural environment. It is a structure of cypress hedges over two metres high that intertwine to create a complex system of paths and corridors, forming an intricate design. Navigating the labyrinth is a fun and challenging experience, and visitors can enjoy the thrill of finding the exit. The goal is to find the centre of the maze, where a sculpture of Eros, the Greek god of love, is located.

Numerous fountains, statues and themed gardens can also be found in the park. The Romantic Garden, for example, is a tranquil place with meandering paths and a waterfall. The neoclassical garden, on the other hand, is inspired by ancient Greece and has a series of statues depicting gods and heroes from Greek mythology.

This labyrinth is located just 1 hour and 15 minutes from the Camp de Tarragona AVE train station and Reus airport. If you are in the towns of Costa Dorada such as Tarragona, Reus, Salou, La Pineda or Cambrils, you can easily get around to enjoy it.

It is important to note that access to the Labyrinth of Horta may require the payment of a small fee, and the park has specific opening and closing times. We recommend visiting the website for information on ticket prices and opening times available to visit the garden.
