Reus Airport is an international airport located just 3 kilometres from the city centre of Reus. It is also a great connection point with other nearby towns such as Valls, Tarragona, Cambrils, La Pineda, Salou and many others. It is the second most important airport in Catalonia in terms of passenger traffic and has experienced constant growth in recent years. Find out all the interesting facts about this airport below.

Reus Airport Origin

The origin of this airport dates back to 1935, after the constitution of the Aeroclub de Reus. In the following year, two runways came into operation and an aerodrome was also installed during the Spanish Civil War, shared with the Maspujols and Salou aerodromes.

Once the conflict was over, Reus airport opened its facilities to civilian traffic, although it continued to house military installations on its grounds. Later, in 1952, a new runway was built and three years later it was opened to national air traffic.

In the 1960s, charter flights began to become popular. Do you know what a charter flight is? It is a type of flight that is not part of a regular schedule or route, and is specially organised to transport a specific individual or group to their final destination. These flights offer some advantages such as greater flexibility, comfort and privacy than regular commercial flights. Thus, given the large increase in these services, Reus airport had to adapt its facilities to these new needs.

In October 1998, the airport was dedicated exclusively to civil use and in 2003, low-cost airlines began to operate, which led to a great increase in air traffic, reaching over one million passengers. Finally, as a result of this growth, Aena has carried out numerous extensions and refurbishments to the facilities until 2021, when work was completed on the extension of the existing terminals.

A sustainable airport

The environmental crisis caused by the drought is on everyone’s lips, and Reus airport wanted to do its bit by contributing to improving water management and saving water. Aena’s commitment to the reduction of this resource has led to the development of a strategic plan for its management that includes measures such as raising awareness among staff and users of the responsible use of water, installation of automated elements in the toilets, drip irrigation for survival, elimination of the use of water hoses for cleaning and good coordination with Aigües de Reus, company that manages this resource in the area, in view of the potential use of its water wells.
