What you need to know about Girona Airport
Girona Airport is a great option if you are travelling to Costa Brava or the province of Girona, as its privileged location is in the town of Vilobí d’Onyar, just 10 kilometres from the capital of Girona, and also very close to the most popular beach destinations for tourists and residents, such as Tossa de Mar, Blanes, Lloret de Mar, Palamós and Platja d’Aro.
Likewise, if your holidays are in Barcelona, there is also a direct connection between Girona Airport and Barcelona, thanks to the Autovia del Mediterrani (A-7), a dual carriageway, which links the main cities on the Catalan coast.
It is also an ideal option if you prefer to land at a smaller aerodrome, but with the same quality services offered by a large airport, such as Barcelona-El Prat Airport.
It is worth noting that in 2024, the Airports Council International (ACI) awarded Girona Airport the prize for the cleanest airport in Europe, a recognition that highlights the excellent cleanliness of the facilities to offer users a pleasant and quality experience.
The aerodrome has also been listed as the best European airport in the category of less than two million passengers, an award it received along with Reus Airport.
If your flight arrives at Reus Airport, you can check our article “Prepare your trip: Tips for your transfer from Reus Airport to your hotel“; or, if you arrive at Barcelona-El Prat Airport, you can read our other publication “Tips for your trip to Barcelona“.
Evolution of Girona Airport
If we go back to the beginnings of air travel in Girona, it is worth noting that the first flight was in November 1913. In the 1930s, several aeronautical clubs appeared and created various aerodromes, such as Figueres and Puigcerdà, which came to a standstill in 1939.
Girona – Costa Brava airport, where it is located today, was inaugurated in 1965, with a runway measuring 2,200 metres by 45 metres, and the single-storey terminal building was subsequently built. Two years later, the runway was extended and opened to national and international civilian passenger and cargo traffic. The number of flights decreased in the 1980s but increased again in the 2000s with the arrival of low-cost airlines.
Currently, Girona-Costa Brava Airport is served by up to 7 airlines, with up to 38 different destinations, with a wide variety of connections to cities in the United Kingdom, such as London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Glasgow. It is also possible to travel to Brussels, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Dublin, Frankfurt, Paris, Belfast, Pisa and Zagreb, among many other cities. It is worth noting that the British are the main users of this airfield, followed by the Germans and the Dutch.
