Reus Airport, which is located about 10 kilometres from the city of Reus and from the city centre of Tarragona, has direct connections with nearby towns such as Valls, Tarragona, Cambrils, La Pineda, Salou and many others. It is the second most important airport in Catalonia, after Barcelona-El Prat Airport, in terms of passenger traffic, experiencing constant growth in recent years.

As we have already mentioned here, this aerodrome was established in 1935, after the recent construction of the Reus Aeroclub. A year later, it already had two runways. Moreover, during the Spanish Civil War, it formed part, together with those of Maspujols and Salou, of the three aerodromes that were based around the city of Reus. From the 1950s onwards, it was opened to civilian traffic. It should be noted that, until 2010, several extensions to the facilities were carried out to improve the quality of services. This past 2022, it almost reached one million passengers, exceeding 20,000 operations per year.

In the terminal, you can find multiple complementary catering and shopping services to make your experience a very pleasant one. Bars, restaurants and cafeterias, with a wide variety of tapas, snacks, sweets and drinks, to recharge your batteries for the last push of your journey; as well as to acquire the best selection of luxury items, whether perfumery, fashion, jewellery, accessories, toys, food and drinks, among other products.

Origin of Misericordia Festivities

Reus is a city characterised by its numerous cultural activities throughout the year, and has been the birthplace of renowned artists, such as the romantic painter Mariano Fortuny and the modernist architect Antoni Gaudí. One of its two main festivals that highlight the cultural richness of the town is La Misericordia.

The origin of this veneration of the Virgin of Misericordia dates back to the 16th century, when the plague epidemic reached the city of Reus, as well as the whole of Europe.

According to the collective imagination, the Virgin appeared to a shepherdess, known as Isabel Besora, who announced that she would cure the population, on the condition that she placed a candle dedicated to her.

For the people to believe the shepherdess, the Virgin kissed her on the cheek, leaving a mark in the shape of a flower, which can also be seen today on the flag of Reus. For this reason, a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin of Misericordia was also built, which can be visited in plaza del Santuario.

There will also be concerts of different styles, such as Les Salvatges, Niloga Boys, Skatarella and PD Bonkers; 30th Reggus festival; and orchestras on the night before the festival.
